Why would I need an endodontic procedure?

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp tissue inside the tooth, consisting of nerve tissue, blood vessels, and connective tissue becomes inflamed or infected because of deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack chip on the tooth. Injury to a tooth may cause damage inside the tooth, even if there are no visible chips or cracks. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess or even losing the tooth . Signs of pulp damage include pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, discoloration of the tooth, and swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums. Sometimes, there are no symptoms.

Treatments offered by endodontics

Endodontics can eventually lead to a variety of treatments such as treatment of dental trauma, root canal therapy as already mentioned which is often referred to in this particular field as endodontic therapy, surgical treatment of cracked teeth, retreatment of treated teeth and so on.

Root canal treatment is often an alternative to having a tooth extracted.
