What are dental cleanings and why are they important?

Dental cleanings, or a dental hygiene clean, involve removing plaque and tartar that build up on your teeth over time. Saliva naturally contains calcium, which helps protect your teeth but also leads to a buildup of hard deposits that can look tooth-coloured, brown, or even black.

These hardened deposits, known as plaque and tartar, can’t be removed at home with regular brushing. That’s why professional cleanings are essential to keep your teeth free from harmful buildup and maintain good oral health.

Your dental cleaning treatment journey at Ferry Dental Centre

  1. Initial consultation: Our hygienist will ask about your medical history, dental background, and current oral hygiene routine to get a clear understanding and suggest any necessary changes.
  2. Soft tissue assessment: Your gum health will be checked for signs of periodontal disease, and an oral cancer screening will be performed.
  3. Treatment: Based on the exam, you’ll receive one of the following:
    • Dental hygiene clean: Removes tartar with an ultrasonic scaler and manual tools, followed by polishing to smooth the surface and reduce bacteria.
    • Air polish: Uses water, flavoured powder, and air to remove tough stains and leave your teeth feeling fresh and bright.
  4. See your results: After your treatment, we’ll show you before-and-after photos so you can see just how thorough your cleaning was. This helps you visualise the impact of the treatment and the importance of ongoing oral care.
  5. Personalised advice: You’ll receive tailored advice on maintaining healthy gums and teeth at home, with guidance on when to schedule future appointments.

Air polish at Ferry Dental Centre

Maintaining optimal oral hygiene is essential, and one of the standout treatments we offer is Air Flow cleaning. Also known as air polishing, this modern method gently removes stains and polishes teeth, leaving your smile bright and refreshed.

Using compressed air to blow a fine powder of aluminium oxide, air flow cleaning effectively clears stains from the tooth surface. It’s a bit like sand blasting but much gentler.

The result? Smooth, clean, and pearly white teeth. Best of all, the procedure is gentle, requires no injections, and provides instant results!

Precision cleaning with dental loupes

At Ferry Dental Centre, we use dental loupes for every cleaning session. These magnification tools enhance visibility, allowing for a more detailed and precise clean that ordinary methods can’t achieve.

With loupes, Justine ensures no spot is missed, elevating a simple dental hygiene clean to a professional-grade treatment. You’ll also see the difference for yourself with before-and-after photos, highlighting the thorough results of your session.

This attention to detail sets us apart, offering a higher standard of care you won’t find everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have a dental hygiene clean?

Most patients benefit from a hygiene clean every 6 months, but those with gum disease, heavy staining, or rapid tartar build-up may need visits every 3–4 months. Your hygienist will recommend the ideal frequency based on your gum health.

Does a dental hygiene clean hurt?

A hygiene clean is typically comfortable, especially with modern ultrasonic scalers and our gentle approach. If your gums are sensitive or inflamed, you may feel mild discomfort, but this improves as your gum health gets better.

What is the difference between a hygiene clean and an air polish?

A hygiene clean removes plaque and tartar using ultrasonic and manual tools to improve gum health.
An air polish focuses on removing deep stains using a fine powder, water, and air spray, leaving teeth noticeably brighter and smoother. Many patients choose both for full cleaning and cosmetic stain removal.

Can professional cleaning remove all stains from my teeth?

Yes—professional cleaning, especially air polishing, can remove the majority of surface stains caused by tea, coffee, wine, smoking, and everyday foods. However, internal tooth discolouration may require whitening.

Do dental hygienists check for gum disease?

Absolutely. During your appointment, the hygienist checks for signs of gum inflammation, bleeding, gum recession, and periodontal pockets. Early detection allows for timely treatment to prevent gum disease from worsening.
