What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure that involves applying a tooth-coloured resin material, a durable plastic composite filling, to a tooth. This material is hardened with a special light, effectively “bonding” it to the tooth and enhancing your smile.

Bonding has long been a cost-effective alternative to crowns or veneers for enhancing smiles. Its popularity has increased recently due to stronger, more attractive materials. Plus, composite bonding is less invasive, often needing little to no removal of the existing tooth structure.

Perfect your smile with composite bonding

Composite bonding is a simple solution to address minor dental imperfections, enhance your confidence, and rejuvenate your smile.

It can effectively repair:

  • Broken, chipped, or misshapen teeth
  • Uneven spaces or small gaps between teeth
  • Stains or discolouration that can’t be removed
  • Sensitivity issues resulting from gum recession
  • Minor tooth decay

Your composite bonding treatment journey

We’ll begin with an initial consultation with our Southampton dentist, to discuss your smile goals and develop a personalised treatment plan.

The best part? Composite bondingdoesn’t require any drilling or numbing injections, so it can typically be completed in just one appointment.

  1. Colour selection: We start by selecting a composite colour that closely matches your natural teeth and aligns with your desired results.
  2. Preparation: Next, we gently prepare the tooth surface and apply a bonding liquid to ensure the composite adheres effectively.
  3. Application: Then, we apply the composite resin to your tooth and sculpt it to blend seamlessly with your other teeth, using a special ultraviolet light to harden it safely.
  4. Refinement: Finally, we refine the shape and polish the tooth, ensuring it matches the natural surface of your other teeth perfectly.

Clinical Case: Restoring Worn Teeth with Composite Bonding

One of our patients came to see us because her teeth had gradually become worn and shorter over time. She felt her smile looked smaller than it used to, and she had also started to notice a clicking sound in her jaw.

After carrying out a full examination of her teeth, bite and jaw joints, we confirmed that composite bonding would be a safe and suitable way to restore both the appearance and function of her smile.

We carefully planned her new smile using digital technology and created a 3D mock-up. This allowed her to see and feel the proposed new tooth shape and length before any treatment began. Once she felt confident and happy with the design, we moved forward.

Six upper teeth were restored in approximately three hours. The procedure was carried out using rubber dam isolation to keep everything clean and dry. The teeth were gently prepared using a special micro-etching technique — this does not involve drilling — which allows the bonding material to attach securely.

After just two appointments, her teeth were restored to a natural, balanced length. Her smile looked fresher and more youthful, and her bite felt more comfortable.

The next stage of treatment will focus on restoring the back teeth to help protect the newly restored front teeth and support long-term stability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does composite bonding last?

With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, composite bonding typically lasts 5–7 years. Its longevity depends on your bite, eating habits, and whether you clench or grind your teeth. Periodic polishing or small touch-ups can help extend its lifespan.

Does composite bonding hurt?

No—composite bonding is usually pain-free. It doesn’t require drilling or injections, making it a comfortable option for nervous or sensitive patients. Most treatments are completed in one appointment.

Is composite bonding better than veneers or crowns?

Composite bonding is ideal for minor imperfections and offers a quick, cost-effective solution with minimal tooth alteration. Veneers or crowns are better for larger restorations, severe discolouration, or long-term durability. Your dentist will advise which option suits your needs best.

How do I care for my teeth after composite bonding?

To maintain your results, avoid biting hard objects, limit highly staining foods and drinks, and maintain regular brushing and dental visits. Wearing a nightguard is recommended if you grind your teeth, as this helps prevent chipping or wear.
